Hello. Thank you for stopping by. My name is Brad Van Lanen and I am a professional in the world of Information Technology. I’ve also been interested in computers. In the 1995 I began attending Devry Institute of Technology down in Addison, IL to pursue a degree in computer programming. Due to circumstances that arose I wasn’t able to continue and left school in late 1996. In December 2000 I decided to attend ITT Technical Institute when they opened a new campus is Green Bay, WI, graduating with an Associate’s degree in Computer Network Systems in December 2002. During my time at ITT Tech I also worked at the school as a Student Support Tech. Following graduation I worked a few contract jobs. In November 2004 I took a training class at PC Productivity that resulted in obtaining my CompTia A+, Microsoft Certified Professional, and Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician certifications. This opened the door to more contract opportunities as I have been doing mainly contract work since early 2005.
Most of my experience in IT has been on the desktop support side. This has included providing 1st and 2nd level desktop support, replacing hardware components and building and configuring computers. Recently I have started to get involved with server support in terms of upgrading servers and replacing hardware components in servers. I have also gained some experience troubleshooting and repairing printers. Much of my experience has been in Windows environments, though I do have knowledge when it comes to Linux and Novell.
In September 2008 I decided to return to school to pursue my Bachelors degree. I am currently in the Information Systems Security program at ITT Technical Institute-Green Bay and plan to graduate in September 2010. I find it to be an extremely interesting and exciting field with numerous opportunities. At this time I’m not sure what I want to specialize in when it comes to IT Security but I do find biometric technology very intriguing.
So now your asking yourself why this blog? I see it as an opportunity to share my knowledge in the field of Information Technology. At the same time it’s important in today’s world to have your name out there and I see this as a way to do that from a social networking standpoint. It will help from a career standpoint as I look to obtain a full-time position in either network administration, desktop support or IT security. It will also help when it comes to my long-term career goal which is to start a consulting business.
My hope with this blog is to provide a wide-range of technology information from simple tips and tricks to the latest happenings in both the IT field and the specific field of IT security. With social networking becoming such a big part of things I may cover that as well.
Hope you find this blog helpful and informative.
